Subreveal Privacy Policy
The short version
- Subreveal works inside your browser. There is no account and no sign-up.
- Your settings and your subtitle files stay on your computer.
- The only time anything leaves your browser is when you search for subtitles online. Then we send your search words to the subtitle sites.
- We don't track you, don't run ads, don't use analytics, and never sell anything about you.
- Uninstall the extension and everything it stored is gone.
What Subreveal does
It shows subtitles on top of whatever video you're watching.
Subreveal finds the video on the page and draws subtitle text over it. You can open subtitle files from your computer (.srt, .vtt, .ass, .ssa, .smi, and .zip or .rar archives), search for subtitles online, change how they look, fix their timing, and save them back out.
What stays on your computer
Everything Subreveal remembers is saved by your browser, on your device. None of it is sent to us.
That includes:
- Your look-and-feel settings: font, size, colour, position, background, playback speed, light or dark theme, and the on/off switch.
- Which subtitle files you've opened and any timing tweaks you made.
- A "Recent / Bookmarks" list: the text of your last 25 subtitle files (bookmarked ones aren't dropped), so you can reload them quickly. You can delete any of these from inside the extension.
- Up to three custom fonts you've chosen to upload.
- If you decide to enter your own OpenSubtitles or SUBDL API key (a personal access code from those sites), that key.
- A small counter of how many OpenSubtitles downloads you've done today, so we can warn you about their daily limit.
One note: the on/off switch and your API keys are saved with your browser's built-in sync. If you're signed into Chrome, Edge or Brave, they can appear on your other computers. That syncing is done by your browser maker, not by us.
What gets sent when you search
Nothing leaves your browser unless you use the Search tab.
When you do search, this is what we send:
- The movie or show name you type. This includes while you're still typing, because we show suggestions as you go.
- The language you pick, season and episode numbers, and the "hearing-impaired" option.
- When you click a result, the ID of that subtitle so we can fetch it.
Who else sees your search
The subtitle sites you search, and the company that hosts our server.
- OpenSubtitles and SUBDL are separate companies. They receive your search words and handle them under their own privacy policies: OpenSubtitles privacy policy and SUBDL.
- Cloudflare hosts our server, so your search passes through their network on the way. They don't get anything else.
What we never do
We don't collect anything about you. Here is that, spelled out.
- No analytics, no tracking, no crash reports, no ads, no fingerprinting (secretly identifying your browser).
- No collecting your browsing history or what's on the pages you visit.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of any information with anyone.
- No code downloaded from the internet. Everything the extension runs is inside the extension itself.
- The "Donate" button just opens paypal window in the extension popup.
Why it asks for permissions
Each permission does one job. None of them are used to collect information.
| Permission | Why we need it |
|---|---|
| Read and change data on all websites | To find the video player and draw subtitles on whichever site you're watching. It does nothing on a page until it sees a video. |
| Active tab | To put the subtitle controls on the page when you open the popup. |
| Storage | To remember your settings and your recent subtitles. |
| Tabs and Web navigation | Some sites put the video inside a box from another site (an iframe). These let us find the right one. |
| Context menus | For the "Subreveal: Open Panel" item in the right-click menu. |
| Offscreen | To unpack .rar files safely in the background. |
| Allow access to file URLs (off by default; you switch it on) | Only if you want subtitles on a video file you opened straight from your computer. |
Children
Subreveal isn't aimed at children under 13.
We don't knowingly collect anything from anyone, of any age.
You're in control
Everything lives on your device, so you can delete it yourself.
Delete recent subtitles from the popup, clear your API keys in the Info tab, or remove everything by uninstalling the extension.
Because we keep nothing about you on our servers, there is nothing for us to hand over or erase. But you're welcome to email subreveal@gmail.com with any question.
If you live in the EU, the UK or California: we handle your search request only because you asked us to run that search. We don't sell personal information. To ask us anything about your data, email subreveal@gmail.com.
